About the Disease
Glucose is a sugar that gives energy to your body. Your bodies can create glucose, and you also get it from the food you eat.
Pancreas is an organ in your body that creates a hormone called insulin. Insulin helps glucose get into the cells of your body to give energy.
However, if you have diabetes, your pancreas doesn’t create insulin or make very little quantity. Because of that, the glucose in your body doesn’t reach the cells and stays in the bloodstream.
This increase in the level of glucose for a long period of time affects some of the major organs in your body like kidneys, eyes, nerves, and heart. Therefore, it is very important to manage your glucose level to prevent any life-threatening condition.
What are the Different Types of Diabetes?
There are three kinds of diabetes-
1. Type 1 Diabetes
In type 1 diabetes, your body makes little or no insulin. That’s because your immune system destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. In that case, you will have to take insulin everyday for proper functioning.
2. Type 2 Diabetes
This is the most common type of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, your pancreas makes the appropriate amount of insulin but your cells don’t use it properly. That results in a high blood sugar or glucose level in your body.
Type 2 diabetes occurs due to an unhealthy lifestyle, especially if you are overweight, have stress or a family history of diabetes.
Usually, you can get type 2 diabetes under control by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
3. Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. It is caused by the hormones produced by the placenta, which can make it harder for insulin to work properly, resulting in high blood sugar levels.
Gestational diabetes usually goes away after giving birth, but it can increase the risk of complications during pregnancy and delivery.
Women who have had gestational diabetes are also at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
However, it can be treated by making healthy lifestyle choices, monitoring blood sugar levels, and sometimes taking medication.
